I thought I didn't like oatmeal, but … : An Irish Oatmeal Revelation
I grew up trying to love oatmeal. Before any major test, I woke up extra early to whip up one of those instant oatmeals with maple or apple or something like that. The bowl was always left with two bites taken, leaving me with a disappointed stomach.
It was always too sweet or too mushy (granted, it was the instant stuff). But what I see now is that the oatmeal never felt wholesome. It never felt right.
A friend recently recommended Irish oatmeal, with just a sprinkle of salt. Irish oatmeal is also known as steel-cut oats, but I went for the actual Irish oats, .
They're chewier than normal rolled oats. And they remind me of a porridge that my mom used to make me when I was sick. Warm with a subtle saltiness and almost creamy.
These take about 5 minutes to prepare. Just pour 1/4 cup of the oats into 1 cup of boiling water, stirring occasionally for 5-7 min. Throw in a sprinkle of salt and maybe a few dried berries, if you're feeling fancy. That's it.
It keeps me full until lunch. And it feels good. It doesn't hurt to have a slow moment in the morning, with a bowl of warmth and a sense of quiet satisfaction.
I am forever converted. Irish oatmeal for life!
